History of The Big Pig Project
Who doesn’t love a 100 pound concrete pig? That was the question I pondered In late 2014 after opening Supper, the sister restaurant to Lunch here in Scott’s Addition. After the opening jitters wore off, I thought as I always do, “What’s next?” I wondered if Scott’s Addition was ready for a festival. Something different that Richmond could really get behind and support. And with all the new residential buildings popping up around us I wanted to promote some true community spirit.
After many great debates and amazing ideas from our team “The Big Pig Project” was born. Twenty two 100 pound pigs were bought and distributed among family, friends, and businesses for decorating. As pigs started to return painted and all dolled in so many creative ways, I knew we had a winner.
On April 18th 2015 the first Big Pig Project came to life. It was a small gathering of about 200 of my closest friends in what use to be our gravel parking lot. We auctioned off all the pigs that day and were able to write our friends at Studio Two Three a donation check for $2,300.00. It’s never a bad day when you can support the local arts community.
Flash forward to 2017 (I can’t remember exactly why we skipped 2016 - Oh wait, we expanded again! Now I remember: we opened our patio at Supper, Urban Roost Catering and Events, and the Beer Garden! Good gravy, it’s all a blur over here sometimes...), and I knew I wanted to go bigger and better. I wanted to move the event into the street and raise the stakes.
My friend Sue Durlak contacted me about getting involved with Ronald Mcdonald House Charities (RMHC). I thought to myself, “Why not use the Big Pig to hit a home run for RMHC and the families they support?”
This will be our fourth year of the Big Pig Project and the third with RMHC. I’ve learned over the years that Richmond is a very caring and supportive community, and a community that I am very proud to be a part of. Over the years the Big Pig Projects have raised more than $140,000.00.
I look forward to seeing all y'all at the 2019 edition of The Big Pig Project on May 5th (12pm-6pm)! Food, booze, entertainment and the star of the show: The Big Pig Auction.
